07/2015 - Small-scale and medium-sized enterprises underestimate safety hazards resulting from cyber attacks

The survey 'Datrenklau 2015' (data piracy) commissioned by Ernst & Young (EY) concerning IT security and data protection in German enterprises shows that some managers and directors do not take the increasing danger of hacker attacks seriously enough. The numbers speak for themselves: According to EY every fifth large-scale enterprise (revenues totaling more than one billion euros) registered one or even more attacks on highly sensitive, internal data during the past three years. Therefore, large-scale enterprises are aware of the dafety hazards and take the corresponding concrete counteractions. According to the EY-survey, medium-sized- (turnover more than 50 million euros) and small-scale enterprises (turnover up to 50 million euros) observed indeed less attacks (16- and 10 per cent respectively), however, on that account they have a false sense of security and assume erroneously not to be potential victims. More than 80 per cent of German managers succumb to the fallacy that they are able to fend off professional attackers by employing anti-virus software, passwords or firewalls. These safety measures are inadequate for enterprises storing sensitive client- and company data on their servers. Despite the rising number of espionage cases, the awareness of danger has not been raising in the last two years [source: Wirtschaftswoche].
