Innovation flourishes where science, business and bold ideas come together. That is exactly what we experienced at the RWTH Tech Impact Festival 2026 in Aachen.

A festival that brings innovation to life

Every year, the festival brings together researchers, start-ups and companies to work together on the technologies of tomorrow. The focus is on topics such as AI, quantum computing, sustainable energy and future mobility, with the aim of bringing innovations from research into practice. What makes the event special is that it is not a traditional conference, but a platform for genuine exchange, new partnerships and concrete use cases. And the icing on the cake for us: based in Aachen, the festival is just a short bike or bus ride away. So, for us, all the conditions were in place for an exciting event that would not only cover topics relevant to our day-to-day work but also address all the latest trends in IT. Our highlights & takeaways:

1. Quantum computing – both an opportunity and a risk Hardly any other topic has attracted as much attention as quantum computing. The key takeaway:

• Existing encryption technologies could become vulnerable in the future
• At the same time, entirely new possibilities for calculations and optimisations are emerging

👉 For the IT world – and therefore for us and our customers – this means that cybersecurity needs to be rethought. Companies should address post-quantum cryptography at an early stage.

2. Autonomous driving & the mobility of the future A key topic was the question: How will we get around in 10–20 years? With players such as BMW in attendance, it became clear that autonomous driving is no longer a future scenario, but is well underway. Transport is becoming increasingly connected, data-driven and efficient. Furthermore, smart infrastructure is becoming just as important as the vehicle itself. 👉 For companies, this means: data integration and digital services are becoming a decisive competitive advantage.

3. New battery technologies & energy In the field of sustainable energy, it became clear that:

• Batteries are developing rapidly (efficiency, charging times, lifespan)
• Energy is being used and distributed more intelligently
• Renewable energies require intelligent control systems

👉 Digitalisation is the key here – without smart systems, there can be no smart energy.

4. Start-ups as drivers of innovation The discussions with deep-tech start-ups were particularly fascinating:

• Rapid iteration rather than long development cycles
• A focus on specific problems and scalable solutions
• Close collaboration with research institutions
